When a pipe starts leaking, many homeowners instinctively grab a roll of duct tape or general-purpose plumbing tape (like silicone fusion tape) for a quick fix. While these tapes are excellent for temporary control in an emergency, they are never a permanent solution for pressurized drain or supply lines. Water pressure, temperature changes, and movement will inevitably cause the seal to fail, often when you least expect it, leading to a much larger, more destructive leak.
A proper leak repair requires replacing the damaged section of pipe or securing the connection using the correct fittings and materials, such as a specialty coupling, pipe cement, or plumber’s putty and thread seal tape (Teflon tape) for threaded connections. Relying on tape for anything more than an hour-long emergency bandage is risky and will ultimately cost more in water damage and emergency plumbing service.
